THE CHALLENGE
Netro Corporation required translation of a wireless telecommunications system manual and several associated documents into Castilian Spanish. The system manual was in FrameMaker format with Illustrator, Corel Draw and PowerPoint graphics, unusual fonts and a complex hyperlinked file hierarchy. There was the typical indexed table of contents, figures and tables, as well as a large library of styles. Many of the graphics contained dozens of separate text items each.
THE SOLUTION
Since some of the fonts used to create the source document were no longer available to the client (one had even been discontinued), Production staff recreated styles, matching as closely as possible a printout of the original. Text was extracted to tables for translation and translation memory permitted all of these very technical documents to be consistent in terminology.
To meet a fairly aggressive turn time, our Production Department started the DTP work while with the translators were working with the content. Graphics were prepared to receive the translated text, dozens of styles were recreated and format adjustments made. Coordinating with the translation team allowed Production to begin work on the graphics before the body of text allowing extra time to adjust for text expansion.
THE BENEFITS
While Netro had been pleased with the quality of the work placed with one of their vendors, turn time and content leveraging were also of paramount importance in vendor selection for this particular project. McElroy brought the advantage of more staff depth to handle the barrage of files (as our client referred to them!) associated with this project. We used translation memory technology to increase consistency across documents, formats and translators and were able to translate and desktop publish this large FrameMaker project in a compressed time frame while offering a very competitive price.
