THE CHALLENGE
DuPont Cyrel® presented McElroy Translation with an opportunity to translate a series of PageMaker documents and subsequent revisions pertaining to a thermal developer. This would be an ongoing project with work in multiple languages at many stages of the process, all at one time. McElroy was required to initiate and maintain consist terminology, catalog and control the graphic elements of the project, and create a customized workflow process for this series of activities.
Unusually, the project began with translation of screen shots (as displayed on the device) into German, Italian, French, Greek, Russian, Norwegian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and Portuguese. The translation memory and a glossary were developed for use in translation of both the Operation Manual and Safety Manual. McElroy's desktop publishing team would handle all requested layout and artwork revisions in both the source and target PageMaker and Illustrator files.
THE SOLUTION
Regarding terminology, we were able to provide our client with frank, upfront advice about controlling the in‑country review process, including providing very specific instructions about the scope of input requested, firm deadline control, and a willingness to work with the translators to reach a consensus on changes to be made. When different reviewers provided feedback on subsequent versions of the documentation, we were able to quickly advise the client of any inconsistencies and to provide authoritative assistance. For this project, we maintained an artwork “glossary,” which enabled us to incorporate artwork revisions in later versions of the manual template. This project moved on many different tracks simultaneously!
